Why Highspell Bothers Me.
I used to be an active player of RuneScape Classic. Even after the game shut down, I continued to play through a community revival project at rsc.vet, which I highly recommend checking out.
Recently, I discovered a game called "HighSpell" through a Reddit post, and my first thought was, "Isn't this just RSC?" I later learned that a developer named Dew had created a reskin of RuneScape Classic. While I understand that nostalgia can attract players, I think it's unfair to rely on it, especially when there’s an official preservation of RSC available at rsc.vet. Although it's great that HighSpell is receiving updates, I believe it would benefit from moving away from the "RSC clone" impression.
I want to clarify that my own game, Otherworld (or Otherworld Classic to be exact), also takes inspiration from RSC. However, we’ve made sure not to use any direct assets or reskins from RSC's materials and models. It just feels a bit off to me when developers lean too heavily on nostalgia.
I don’t mean to offend Dew, the developer behind HighSpell; it genuinely seems like a great game from what I’ve seen. Still, the approach feels a little distasteful to me.
